Fun is Good Friday

From my first full-time job at Northwestern University, I've been challenged to do a lot with a little. We had the smallest staff and the smallest budget in the Big Ten, but that never kept us from finding ways to stretch the dollar. Win or lose, we found ways to market the student-athletes in the community to build relationships that went beyond the score.

What's in a uniform? Ask an athlete, and you might find out the clothing worn on the outside has a profound impact on the mentality within. At Ohio University, we've taken that principle and run with it - creating a BOBCAT BLACKOUT football game in conjunction with the athletic department.

Just like any job, working in sports has its ups and downs. The obvious down would be the long hours which lead to long days which contribute to long weeks. Before you know it, the entire season is over, you're a year older, and you're looking to plan for next year.

Overtime at Work? Sounds Like Fun

Fri, 08/09/2013 - 12:17 — Curtis Walker

There were 144,274 fans that attended the 2012 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Final Four in New Orleans last year; there were over 1,500 media members in attendance who were credentialed for the tournament, reaching the highest in tournament history; and there were numerous fans, in countries worldwide, that tuned in to watch the game. Now is that madness or what?

Phanatical Fridays

Fri, 07/26/2013 - 07:00 — Maria Solomon

Growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia has left an indelible mark on me as a sports fan. While the local teams have tested my fandom and even though I have since left the area, I still remain an unwavering fan of the Phillies, Flyers, Eagles and Sixers (insert Philly fan joke here).

Before starting the MBA/MSA program at Ohio University, I was an intern for the University of Memphis athletic communications department. If you've ever been to Memphis or been involved with sports in Memphis, you know that charity and giving back are huge parts of the sports community.

This week, I was honored to speak at the AHL meetings in Cleveland, OH. Not only was it an amazing experience, I had a BLAST meeting everyone.

Which brings me to today's post.

Conferences, meetings, and gatherings should not always be all about business. Don't forget to have fun too! There are plenty of days in the work week to sit behind a desk and put a pen to paper and just grind day after day. Take these opportunities to have a little fun.

And here's why:

1. Business is better with people you like

Bigger Isn't Always Better

Fri, 06/21/2013 - 07:00 — Carrie Snyder

Wooden horses, floppy hats, pony rides and a DJ. What do these things have in common? My guess is you wouldn’t say a softball game. However in the sports marketing world, almost anything goes. Every time someone asks what profession I’m in, they inevitably say “well isn’t that fun”. In the age of new technologies and easy access to sporting events through television, computers and our phones, we are now faced with the challenging task of pulling fans away from the screen and attending games in person.

Seeing the Unseen

Fri, 06/14/2013 - 07:00 — JohnLBollinger

On August 19, 1951, an estimated 18,369 fans looked on at Sportsmen Park as the Detroit Tigers were set to square off against the St. Louis Browns in the second game of a doubleheader. As the crowd looked on for the second “first” pitch, they were taken back by the 3’6 Eddie Gaedel, wearing number 1/8, stepping up to the plate.

Have Fun YOUR Way

Fri, 06/07/2013 - 06:00 — Ethan Saporito

As organizations are looking to keep fans in the seats instead of on their couch, it’s become a key objective of organizations to focus on interjecting FUN into their operations. The game/event has to be more fun than consuming the experience elsewhere.

You see teams doing this in a variety of ways – from promotional staples like Dollar Dog Nights, to capitalizing on current events, like the Lennay Kekua Bobblehead giveaways (spoiler: the bobbleheads don’t exist!)

Fun is STILL Good

Fri, 05/31/2013 - 13:58 — Laura Waters-Brown

In the everyday hustle and bustle of ticket sales and sponsorship, the aspect of fun is becoming more and more imperative to the success of teams
everywhere. If you ask me, having fun at a game is a major factor in the ticket decision buying process.

Five-Year Plans

Fri, 05/17/2013 - 08:25 — Matthew Kutnick

A planner through and through, I have been known to meticulously organize my days, weeks, months, and of course make my own five-year plan. While there have been some unexpected stops along the way, over the next year, I will be living out the conclusion of the five-year plan I developed my Junior year at Northwestern.
