YOU ARE UNREPEATABLE

Mon, 07/20/2015 - 09:09 — caseyflacks

Group sales must be a year-round, full-time 12 month effort to fully maximize your potential.

The answer stunned my caller.

He had asked, "When should I put my staff through group sales training? Our first game is right before Labor Day.

I responded, "Six month ago is when you should have done it. Since you're asking now, I would do it tomorrow."

The Ins and Outs of NBA Cares

Wed, 07/15/2015 - 09:40 — ericshainock

NBA Cares is the league’s global community outreach initiative that addresses important social issues throughout the world such as education, youth and family development, and health and wellness. The first thing to note here is that it is a global initiative- why you may ask? This is because the NBA is the most global sport out of the Big 4. The NBA impacts people worldwide and so its mission makes sure to help out in areas where it has fans.

Swing for the Fences

Major League Baseball is in their annual All-Star break and unveiled its new look 2015 Home Run Derby last night, an annual event showcasing the game's elite power hitters. If possible, MLB may have hit the most impressive shot of the night with their decision to be bold and make changes that have earned nothing but positive reviews from media and fans alike.

Here are some of my biggest takeaways from the new-look event:

ARE WOMEN'S PRO SOCCER TEAMS READY?

Thu, 07/09/2015 - 13:31 — Steve DeLay

NWSL teams must be ready to make Women's World Cup bump last

In Monday's USA Today, Nancy Armour wrote, "A decade from now, "teenage girls -- and boys -- will recall where they were when this group of strong, powerful women brought an entire country to a standstill"

Auburn University Athletics, the state of Alabama, and pro golfer and Auburn alumnus Jason Dufner and his wife Amanda are teaming up to help fight hunger in their community. At a time where children are moldable and are continuing to grow, the proper nutrients and diet is key to the development of children’s bodies. Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, lower academic achievement, lower IQ, and a shorter attention span. As a result, child hunger is one of the most pressing social issues that society faces nationally and internationally.

TAKEAWAYS FROM NACMA & NAATSO

Tue, 07/07/2015 - 08:34 — Shawn K. Sullivan

How do I know if a convention was good? By the number of notes I record.

During this year’s National Association of Collegiate Marketer’s Association (NACMA) & National Association of Athletics Ticket Sales and Operation (NAATSO) convention a few weeks back, I typed in numerous notes into my Evernote app (unpaid plug - terrific app!). I didn’t always write down the exact concepts the presenters were explaining, opting to challenge myself, “How can we take that idea and mold it on our campus?”

A TRUE VALUE PROPOSITION

“A person really doesn’t become whole, until he becomes a part of something that’s bigger than himself.” -Jimmy Valvano

In February of this year, I was lucky enough to meet the Co-Founder of a small non-profit organization called Keep On Keeping On (KOKO). Their mission is to assist and raise awareness for those living with severe physical disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy and Muscular Dystrophy. To date, the organization has helped more than 80 individuals throughout Illinois and the neighboring states.

FIND OPPORTUNITY

Mon, 06/29/2015 - 10:05 — Mary.Schwappach

How do we use technology to help us get fans to buy ticket packages instead of single game 'deals'?

A few weeks ago at the SBJ Conference on ticketing, there was a lot of talk about making it easy for fans to buy tickets via mobile. I agree that mobile, millenials and technology all should be terrific tools and a focus for future ticket sales.

Earlier this year I wrote about Oklahoma State University's Orange and Black Give Back week- a week long celebration of giving back to the community, consisting of multiple service projects each day. The Portland Timbers, T2, and Thorns FC among other organizations are taking part in Stand Together Week, which is a week (June 8-14) of dedicated service projects within the Portland community.

HALL OF FAME DADS

Tue, 06/23/2015 - 10:35 — Dan Migala

Like me, so many of us in the sports industry were inspired to get in this industy by their dad’s love of sport. As we celebrate Father’s Day and the boundless love of fathers, I wanted to share my favorite dad story from time in the sports industry. It’s an excerpt from my book Dugout Wisdom http://www.amazon.com/Dugout-Wisdom-Life-Lessons-Baseball/dp/0615213960 and told by Goose Gossage. Best wishes for all the “Hall of Fame Dads” out there for the happiest of Father’s Days and thank you for inspiring a love of sport in all of us.

“This is for you, Dad!” - Goose Gossage

CHOOSE A JOB YOU LOVE

Scripts work for movies, plays and yes, sales calls.

If I had a dollar for every time I heard a salesperson or sales manager say, "I don't believe in scripts for sales calls. I want to put my own personality to it. I don't need to know what to say."

Well, I'd have a whole boatload of dollars.

Much has been made about the Ray Rice situation that unfolded last year. The facts are what they are: http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/11551518/how-ray-rice-scandal-unf...

TAKE A CHANCE

Tue, 06/16/2015 - 10:01 — NDMom

I was a stay at home mom for the entire time my three children were growing up. When our youngest child, our daughter Sydney was heading off to her freshman year at Notre Dame my friend asked me what I was going to do with myself. To which I responded that I expected that something would come along that spoke to me. Shortly after that I received a call asking me if I would be interested in being a member of an advisory committee they were putting together. They explained that they were looking for a few mothers who had some personal experience with football to be a part of the committee.

LOT'S OF TALK ABOUT DATA BUT MISSING SOME KEY FUNDAMENTALS

I had the pleasure of spending all day today at the Sports Business Journal Ticketing Conference. Plenty of good stuff including...

  • Ashley Bradbury from Facebook commented that if teams think the purpose of Facebook pages and posts is to immediately drive ticket sales, they are fooling themselves. Her comment that for teams to really engage fans on Facebook, they have to be prepared to give, give, give and provide content. Then, those fans over time will consider buying something from you.

With the FedEx St. Jude Classic set to begin this Thursday, I want to take a second to discuss the tournament and its association with St. Jude.

Team of Tiggers

Tue, 06/09/2015 - 08:15 — Brad Wurthman

Change is inevitable. It’s frightening and invigorating and nerve-wracking and exciting all rolled in to one ball of emotion and planning. Whether it’s in your personal life, your career, or your day-to-day, change really is the only constant. Recently, I’ve gone through a transition in my professional life that brought me to Champaign, IL to join the team with the University of Illinois Fighting Illini. All of the emotions listed above, and then some, came with that decision.

FOR WINTER SPORTS TEAMS AND COLLEGES, JUNE COULD BE THE MOST IMPORTANT MONTH OF THE YEAR FOR TICKET SALES SUCCESS

June? That's usually when sales die for colleges, hockey teams and basketball teams. School is out. The glow of the season has faded away. The dog days of summer are approaching, family vacation and the like. June can't be the most important month?

It is. Here's why.
